Washington State Cannabis Sales Continue to Decline

Now that 2024 is behind us, we can take a look at how the Washington state cannabis industry held up. According to recent data from the LCB, the Evergreen State saw a total of $1,229,695,710.401 in sales, with $454,897,783.17 collected in excise taxes.

Compared to the year before, cannabis sales underperformed slightly in 2024. In 2023, the state saw $1,257,812,688.03 in sales, with $465,399,615.68.

While the year-to-year difference between 2023 and the most recent year is slight, the 2024 cannabis sales numbers are consistent with a downward trend in Washington state’s cannabis sales in recent years. In 2022, the state brought in more than $1.3 billion in cannabis sales. 2021 brought even more, with nearly $1.5 billion in total sales.

Washington state’s cannabis sales surpassed $1 billion for the first time in 2019 with a total of $1,047,288,099.971.

King County remains highest in cannabis sales

Consistent with previous years, King County brought in the most cannabis sales in 2024, with more than $115 million. This number reflects the larger decline in Washington state cannabis sales, as 2023 brought in more than $121 million.

Second to King County is Pierce County, with more than $54 million in total sales. Snohomish and Spokane counties follow Pierce, with slightly less than $50 million in sales for the year. As for lowest in cannabis sales, Wahkiakum County saw just over $205,000—which comes as no surprise as the county is one of the least populated in the state.
